1. Pediatric Surgery Self Assessment Program (PSSAP) – Part VII is here!

The PSSAP allows APSA members to earn CME credits by taking this online exam to earn 10 credits per Part with each Part featuring 60 questions in a four-section assessment. The program currently includes: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI and Part VII.  The goal of PSSAP is to provide pediatric surgeons with a broad-based educational experience using current evidence-based literature and practical experience. It addresses the core competencies of medical knowledge and patient care of pediatric surgery as defined by the American Board of Surgery. The test is intended to fulfill Part 2 of the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirement – lifelong learning and self assessment. The PSSAP committee will continue to provide 20 Part 2 CME credits for MOC on a yearly basis. In addition to fulfilling MOC requirements, PSSAP was designed to meet the educational needs that underlie the professional practice gaps of pediatric surgery. Upcoming PSSAP editions will focus on oncology, trauma and critical care. One current problem is the web-based delivery system and the ability to leave the test and come back at another time. Efforts are being made to improve this and make the system more user friendly.

Your input on how PSSAP might improve is welcome. Please contact John Waldhausen, chair of the PSSAP Committee, or Dave Powell, chair of the Education Committee, with feedback or suggestions for future versions of PSSAP.

PLEASE NOTE: As of July, 1, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) requires a passing score of at least 75% on self-assessment tests in order to claim Maintenance of Certification self-assessment credit. You will need to achieve a score of 75% or higher on each PSSAP section (there are four sections per exam).

2. Using the Evidence in Pediatric Surgery

Although not yet available for CME credit, this evidence-based learning program is now available to APSA members.

The specialty of pediatric surgery is rapidly progressing from an anecdotal and historical practice paradigm to an evidence-based model. Pediatric surgery clinical researchers are generating increasing levels evidence to guide patient care. With this transition has come the challenge to effectively and efficiently distribute an analysis of the evolving evidence.

Using the new article-based educational program, Evidence in Pediatric Surgery, will help practicing pediatric surgeons incorporate the available medical evidence into the care of their patients. This program is designed to provide a concise, clinical problem-based review of the evidence for a selected topic. The reviews are generated by searching the medical literature for peer-reviewed articles published within the past five years pertaining to human pediatric subjects. Evidence meeting these criteria is then organized into sections based on clinical problems. The first article in the series is now available: GERD.

3. APSA/Journal of Pediatric Surgery CME Program

Take advantage of this CME opportunity from APSA and JPS. Each quarter, the Journal of Pediatric Surgery includes CME exams designated for potential CME credit. Each exam is based on articles published in Journal of Pediatric Surgery and consists of a test with short questions followed by a brief evaluation.

APSA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. APSA designates this educational activity for Category 1 AMA PRA Credits™  for Part 2 of the American Board of Surgery Maintenance of Certification, Life Long Learning and Self-Assessment.

The CME activity is free to APSA members. Click here to get started.
