Specialty Training Positions in Areas of Pediatric Surgery
--Revised December 17, 2007

The Association of Pediatric Surgery Training Program Directors (APSTPD) has reviewed the process for optimizing and protecting identification of possible applicants for specialty training positions in pediatric surgery. There is concern among the pediatric surgery program directors that the current process of recruitment for these specialty training positions may not be best for the applicants. These positions include critical care, ECMO and laparoscopic fellowships as well as other similar positions. Some of these positions have been approved by the ACGME and some are not accredited. None of these specialty fellowships can apply credit toward, or substitute for, any portion of an ACGME accredited pediatric surgery residency. Many of the candidates for these positions come from the unmatched pool of applicants for residency training in ACGME approved pediatric surgery training programs.

At the 2006 fall meeting of the APSTPD, it was resolved that a list of all available specialty training programs will be posted on the APSA web site. Candidates who are interested in one of these positions should review this list of programs. By agreement among the pediatric surgery training program directors, there will be a moratorium on contact initiated by the training programs with potential candidates for these specialty training positions until noon (EDT) the Monday following the release of the NRMP match results.
